Freedom is important. The Count of Monte Cristo and Blessing, both explore the theme of freedom in different ways. In the Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond finds out that even in the darkest times, there is light. In Blessings, the two main characters find freedom in doing what they enjoy, like painting.
First, in The Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond is in jail, and has given up on hopes of escaping. He started not to eat, so he would die. One day he heard a scraping noise nearby. “Although weakened, the young man’s brain instantly responded to the idea that haunts all prisoners- Liberty!” This is when he hears the scraping noise. It is important because it is why his hope returns. He figured it could either be a construction worker or a prisoner trying to escape. He knocks on the wall, and the scraping stops until night, which meant it was a prisoner. “Full of hope, Edmond swallowed a few mouthfuls of bread and water, and, thanks to the vigor of his constitution, found himself well-nigh recovered.” This quote is important because it was when he found out it was a prisoner, and his hope came back. His hope was renewed and he began to eat again. He figured if someone could escape then he could, too. The theme of this selection is that even if life seems like it is terrible, it will get better. He was going to die, until he heard the scraping noise, and his hope came back. He felt like giving up, but he found hope again, and decided to live.
Second, in Blessings, the two characters, Rene and Jesse go hiking and get to the top of a mountain. They look down on the world and talk about their lives. They talk about what they do to escape from their lives and be free. “Rene: Maps. Picture maps. Of places. Uncle Randy says you make amazing mirrors. From redwood. Jesse: Don’t know how amazing they are. But I make ‘em. And sell ‘em. So people can see themselves in the- through the wood. Rene: What else do you do? Jesse: Like to cook. Like poems.” This is when Rene and Jesse are discussing what they enjoy to do.  It’s important because they get to know eachother better, and so does the reader. They also speak about how life is different. “Rene: What’s it like having Uncle Randy live in your house? (Jesse looks right at Rene, surprised by her directness.) Rene: Do you wish he’d go away? That it could be all yours again? (Rene waits for an answer.) Jesse: Rene, I’ve spent a lot of days, night, too, wishin’ that things weren’t the way they are. But yeah. I’d wish I’d never had to sell the cabin and all you people had stayed back in San Francisco.” This quote is important because they are talking about their lives, and it is an important piece of information for the reader. Together, the two characters talk about their lives.
In the two selections, they each have a theme of freedom. They show freedom in different ways. In The Count of Monte Cristo, a person in jail hears a sound that reassures him of escape. In Blessings, two people talk about what they do to achieve freedom. Freedom is an important thing to have, and is a common topic.

Literary Analysis

The Count of Monte Cristo and Blessing explore the theme of freedom in different ways. Freedom in my opinion is the ability to be escape reality and be able to be yourself without the judgement of others. It’s some of the things people do that they’re able to make everybody and all their worries disappear. Everybody has their own methods of being free and escaping reality. Some people paint, write, play a sport, dance, sing, listen to music, or something else. I know I like to go on my Jet ski, listen to music, or play soccer. It’s my moment of relief. All of my stress slowly drifts away. In Blessings, Rene’s way of relieving stress is painting and Jesse’s is writing.
In Blessings by Mary Hall Surface, Rene has his own way of being mentally free. With no worries. He paints. In section 25 Rene says, “Man, I’ve got to bring my paints up here.” In that paragraph when Jesse asks him what type of paint he paints that I can tell that when he paints with watercolor, he let’s all of his emotion out with just one brush and a couple of water colors. That’s what I’ve done and what I’ve seen many famous/non-famous artists do. It relaxes
you.
In The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, Edmond Dantes, an imprisoned man,  hears a noise late at night that wakes him up from his slumber. Being in prison for so many years, he thinks it is another prisoner attempting to be free and starts to have hope that this is his big chance to escape as well.

Freedom is a way to be able to leave the pains of the way you live now and start over with a fresh page in life. The count of monte cristo and blessings explore the theme of freedom in different ways. In Count of Monte Cristo freedom for Edmond is light finding a ray of light in  the darkest of times. In Blessings freedom is something you must work for and it will not be given to you.

In the Count of monte cristo there is a hope of freedom freedom because of the scratching noise coming from the wall. First at the beginning of the passage it says “Although weakened the young mans brain instantly responded to the idea that haunts all prisoners liberty...” In this little part it means that the thought of freedom can strengthen even the weakest of brains. Second in the passage it said “ Full of hope, Edmond swallowed a few mouth fulls of bread and water...” In that section he waited all day to hear that sound and in the mean time he was waiting with hope.

In Blessings the idea is that if you want freedom of to fell free you must do it your self. First it said  “Rene I have spent a lot of days and nights, too, wishing that things weren't they way they are...” In this part Rene and Jessie are talking and wishing that things were different and to be free.

Freedom is something so strong that even the thought of it can save your life, but to earn freedom you must get it your self.

Freedom can be the escape from reality and can also be escape from someone’s control. Have you ever been confined, or your have parents lecture every two seconds? Don’t you want freedom from all that? In The Count of Monte Cristo and Blessings both explore the theme of freedom in different ways.

First, in The Count of Monte Cristo, they show freedom about escaping from some’s control. The someone’s control is the jail and the law. Edmond had lost all hope, and was starving himself wanting to die. Then, he heard a scratching sound in the cell next door and realized that it was someone trying to get free and escape. It gives him hope of escaping. “Although weakened, the young man’s brain instantly responded to the idea that haunts all prisoners - liberty!” The idea of freedom takes over and makes him excited, plus, for the first time he eats. “ Full of hope, Edmond swallowed a few mouthfuls of bread and water, and, thanks to the vigor of his constitution, found himself well-nigh recovered,” This shows that freedom gives hope and the thought of freedom gives happiness.

Second, in Blessings, the author shows freedom about escaping from reality. Rene and Jess are friends and they are hiking. They feel free from reality in the high mountains. “Rene, I’ve spent a lot days, nights, too, wishing’ that things weren’t the way they are.” This quote mentioned by Jess to Rene explains that Jess is upset with some things the way they are right now and just wants to escape from it for a while. They can also be free to show who they really are with their artistic ways. “Man, I’ve got to bring my paints up here.” said by Rene and “ Like to cook. Like poems. Ever written a poem?” shows that they can express what they feel freely in their artistic talents. In conclusion, freedom can just be escape from your regular life outside.

Overall, freedom can be expressed in so many varieties of ways, whether it’s about escape from confinement or even just from reality.

Literary Analysis

In the books, The Count of Monte Cristo and Blessings both explore the idea of freedom in different ways. I agree that these books have the idea of freedom for many reasons.

First, In the Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond Dantes is trying to starve himself to death, being locked in prison. "It was a continual scratching, as if made by a huge claw, a powerful tooth, or some iron instrument attacking the stones." This quote explains how Edmond kept hearing this noise and immediately had the thought of freedom. Freedom is the thought prisoners think about all the time. It gave Edmond a small pinch of hope left in his life.

It is kind of the same thing in the book Blessings. "Down at Sunset Beach. You can see it flow clear down the mountain 'til it forms a riverbed right on the beach, in the sand. The water looks real clear. Light. Not like the ocean at all. Like it's not suppose to be there, but it is. Then the waves just lap up and catch it, little bit at a time. Then it all changes. Jesse sees freedom on the other side of the valley from where he hiked. Jesse and Rene dream they could get across.
In the book The Count of Monte Cristo  and the play Blessings the theme of freedom and escape is expressed throughout the passages. In the count of monte cristo a prisoner, Edmond who plans to starve to death is greeted with the idea of freedom after he hears a noise from the outside. in paragraphs 3 and 12 Edmond expresses his thoughts of freedom. When the guard comes he immediately talks loudly to keep the guard from hearing the noise thus describing his thirst for freedom.
In the play Blessings two kids go down a secret path and climb up a hill to watch a sunset. The feeling of escape is expressed through poems and paints. In the paragraphs 55 and 25 the two kids talk about their paints and poems and how they express their feelings through them. The feeling of freedom and escape are equally expressed in these two short texts.

Freedom can be the escape from someone elses control or from the world. It is finding yourself and losing yourself at the same time. Freedom is not what we acquire, its what you think. The theme of the Count of Monte Cristo Edmond learns that even in the darkest times light can come and lead the path. In the blessings we learn that you can escape and express themselves artistically and free themselves from judgement. The Count of Monte Cristo and Blessings explore the theme of freedom in different ways.
First, in The Count of Monte Cristo Edmond, a prisoner was trying to kill himself because he has been locked away from the entire world  in jail for years and he couldn’t stand it anymore. He one day found hope when he heard a scratching noise through the cells. He dreamed that if someone was trying to break free from jail then maybe he can do the same. He found out that it was another person in jail because of his working patterns. Getting out of that cell would give him freedom, no restrictions. He would be able to see the light and be able to walk around the world without a leash strapped to his neck. “Although weakened, the young man’s brain instantly responded to the idea that haunts all prisoners- liberty! It seemed to him that heaven had at length taken pity on him…”  This means that he had liberty before and he ruined it by breaking the law. He knows that freedom is a huge responsibility. He can either carry on with his free life or he can go back to the way he is now. “There is no doubt about it,” thought he; “it is some prisoner who is striving to obtain his freedom. Oh if I were only there to help him!” He has faith in him but at the same time he doesn’t. How could he get out without being caught?
Next, in Blessings, the characters are Jesse and Rene. They both can escape from reality. They can be free, they can express themselves in poetry and art.. I can relate. When I dance I don’t think about anything else, the homework I forgot to do, the friends drama, or even what I’m going to have for dinner. It’s just me moving through motions and expressing myself the way I want to and not getting judged by everyone else. It feels amazing to break free and you have another sensation of the world and you can really enjoy yourself. “Down at the Sunset Beach. You can see it flow clear down the mountain ‘til it forms a riverbend right on the beach, in the sand.” They can also look at nature and be free. Your thoughts can roam everywhere and you can see how beautiful everything really is. It doesn’t have to be physically free, but it can be mentally free. “Oh my gosh. Like it? I didn’t know sunsets came like this!” Sunsets can make you slow down time. It can make everything in the world stop.
Freedom can be the escape from someone elses control or from the world. It is finding yourself and losing yourself at the same time. The Count of Monte Cristo and Blessings both express freedom in two same and two different ways.

Literary Analysis
Both The Count of Monte Cristo and Blessings explore the theme of freedom in different ways. Freedom is in the eye of the beholder. Meaning that whatever you think is right for yourself to just let go is what you need to do more often in life. Freedom can also be described as a hobby or hope.
In The Count of Monte Cristo, the main character Edmond Dantes hears a strange sound coming from the room next to him. The sound didn’t wake him up right away because it could’ve been an animal. But it just kept coming. So Edmond than thought that a prisoner is trying to escape. And if he does maybe he could take Edmond with him. This is the first sense of hope he had for freedom. He was trying to starve himself to death. But the jailer came in and Edmond did not want the prisoner to get caught. “Dantes raised himself up and began to talk about everything; about the bad quality of the food, about the coldness of his dungeon, grumbling and complaining, in order to have an excuse for speaking, louder, and wearying the patience of his jailer, who out of the kindness of heart had brought broth and bread for his prisoner.” Then the jailer left only because he thought Dantes was delirious. “He saw but one means of restoring lucidity and clearness to his judgment. He turned his eyes toward the soup which the jailer brought.” Dantes ate not to survive but because his hope was restored and he believed that he could escape one day.
In the play Blessings, the main characters Jesse and Rene travelled to a mountain where everything looked beautiful and where they could let their minds drift off somewhere else. Jesse came up here often after her uncle moved in her house because up there nothing seemed to matter. ”Man I got to bring my paints up here.”  Rene liked to paint picture maps and sell them to people. It was the first time Jesse went to the top of that mountain. But once she did she felt like she could do anything. Jesse loved to write poems. “Love to cook. Like poems, ever written a poem.” It was her hobby just like Jesse’s hobby is to paint. In Blessings Jesse and Rene scaled the mountain to get away from reality, to feel freedom. In The Count of Monte Cristo Edmond Wants to get out of captivity, so he could feel freedom too.

Literary Analysis

In the stories The Count of Monte Cristo and Blessings, the lesson of freedom and escape is taught. To most people freedom and escape mean to get lost in your thoughts and be free from the things that are bothering them in life. In The Count of Monte Cristo and Blessings, the characters think that escape and freedom mean leaving somewhere or finding a way to escape the reality of life.

In The Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond Dantes has started to feel that all hope was lost, that he would never have the freedom he once had, and that life wasn’t worth living. Then one night he heard a scratching noise coming from the cell next door to his. “Although weakened, the young mans brain instantly responded to the idea that haunts all prisoners- liberty!” Edmond had started to starve himself. He had started to believe that life wasn’t worth living if he couldn’t be free.  When the scratching began, Edmond started to see life differently than he had before.    “Full of hope, Edmond swallowed a few mouthfuls of bread and water, and, thanks to the vigor of his constitution,  found himself well-nigh recovered.” That one little noise gave Edmond the sense of hope that saved his life. That one little sound gave him the feeling that escape might really be possible and that he might be able to be free again. In Blessings, Jesse and Renee both had felt that their freedom was taken away from them. JESSE : Renee, I’ve spent a lot of days, nights too wishin’ that things weren’t the way they are.” Jesse doesn’t like the new people who have moved into his town. RENEE : “Being by myself. I understand me when everybody else is lost. (JESSE laughs). Lets go back.” Renee feels that she is lost when everyone is around and knows who they are, but when everyone else is lost and doesn't know who they are, Renee knows exactly who she is and she feels free.

In The Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond Dantes is on the verge of death until he hears a sound coming from the cell next to his. “Edmond heard a hollow sound in the wall against which he was laying.” Edmond heard the sound and it gave him hope. He saw that escape might be possible and he learned that there is always some hope in any situation, even in the most darkest situations you can always find a ray of hope and freedom. In Blessings, Renee and Jesse are both going through a rough patch in their life. Renee has just moved to Jesse’s hometown from San Raphael. Jesse is having a hard time adjusting to all the strangers that have moved into his town. “RENEE : You’ve got stranger invasion.” Jesse and Renee both needed to adjust to their new lives. They both realized that life is going to throw challenges at them that they will have to accept and they learned that when life throws a challenge in your way, you should try to accept it and something good might come out of it. If Renee never moved to Jesse’s town, they never would have met and become friends.

Although the characters in these stories live in different worlds and in  different situations, they can be brought together by what they learned. They learned that escape and hope can be reached no matter what you are going through, that no matter where you are, you are not alone and that hope and escape are always possible.

Freedom is escape from the world around you  it can be explored in many different ways. In The Count of Monte Cristo and Blessings explore the theme in different ways freedom.
First in the book The Count of Monte Cristo Edmond Dantes finds freedom in a different ways. Edmond learned about freedom.First way that he shows freedom.  “For a week since he resolved to die, and during the four days that he had been carrying out his purpose” When Edmond took that bite of the food a felt free he felt like a new person that it was worth staying alive when he heard that prisoner  he knew that he had a chance. That he shouldn't give up if he fought he would have a chance to get out.Second way he shows freedom is  “ It is a prisoner said Edmond joyfully.”He knew he was going to be free so when he found out that is was a prisoner he knew that he had a chance he kept hope. That is what I think they express freedom in The Count Of Monte Cristo.
Second in the play From Blessings Rene and Jesse find different ways to express freedom.First one way Jesse shows freedom or escape . First  “ High as you can get without ropes.See that ridge?Sheer rock-face.I scale that once a year. Since I was twelve.it’s my test” When Jesse says this you can tell he comes up here to get away from things to escape reality just to take in the world around him.He has looked at things in detail around him when he describes them in detail. Second one way Rene shows freedom or Escape is when. " Man I got to bring my paints up here." You know she does this for fun because she wants just to look at the sky and savor it and free reality and that is how Renee gets free and that is one way I can tell she does it for fun.
That is how they show freedom and escape in these books and those are the quotes I got from this section.

Literary Analysis

Freedom is the escape from reality and others control. Freedom can drive many people in different ways. It shows how freedom is one thing that, if achieved it can bring happiness and peace. In The Count of Monte Cristo and Blessings explore the theme of freedom in different ways.

First, In The Count Of Monte Cristo the main character Edmond Dantes hears noises which make him urge for freedom and makes him learn that freedom is what he needs. At the end of paragraph 2 it said "Edmond raised his head and listened. It was a continual scratching, as if made by a huge claw, a powerful tooth, or some iron instrument attacking the stones." This is significant because it is starting Edmond to believe that he might be able to escape. It really gives him a thought that freedom is coming. Another quote from the story that is significant is in paragraph 17 which is "It is a prisoner said Edmond joyfully." This shows that Edmonds strive for freedom was coming and he could be free and happy. This story really shows how freedom can drive a person. Another story that has freedom is in Blessings but it comes in a different way.

Second, In Blessings the two main characters Rene and Jesse both climb up a mountain to have fun. In the story when they make it up the mountain they feel and they see the view they get an amazing sense of freedom. Then they talk to each other about what they like. A quote from Blessings is in line 26 which is “Man I’ve got to bring my paints up here.” This explains how Rene expresses freedom by painting. It makes her, feel free and happy. Another quote that demonstrates freedom is “Rene, first, would you read this? (JESSE takes a piece of paper out of his shirt pocket. He hands it to RENE) It’s a poem. real short. I wrote it about this place. This illustrates how Jesse expresses his freedom which is through poems. This story really demonstrates how freedom can be shown through many different ways. In both stories freedom is described, but in different ways.

Freedom can be found in many ways, all you have to do is find.

In the Count of Monte Cristo they both explore the theme of freedom in different ways. Freedom can be an escape from control or reality. In Count of Monte Cristo a man is in prison and is trying to starve himself, then he hears a noise from the wall. He realizes its a prisoner and he starts eating again hoping he can reclaim his freedom. In the scene of “From Blessings” Jesse and Rene escape from reality.

A example of the main idea being freedom from the Count of Monte Cristo is “There can be no doubt about it thought me it is some prisoners striving to obtain freedom. Oh if I were only there to help him.” An example from the Blessings is them not talking about the problems and relaxing.

Both have a sense of freedom and getting away from reality.

Literary Analysis

Freedom is the escape of reality. The Count of Monte Cristo and Blessing both explore the theme of freedom in different ways.  Freedom can be releasing yourself from anything that causes stress, but it can also be something that gives you joy or happiness, also realising from anything harmful in life.
Edmond, from The Count of Monte Cristo, is feeling useless in life. He starts to starve himself because he feels there no point to live. One night he hears a small scratching sound coming through the walls. I think this is a good example of something being so small yet so important. That even the tiniest sound, fills Edmond with hope. When he finally came to terms with what that noise could possibly be, the narrators comes in and explains Edmond’s thoughts, “Although weakened the young mans brain instantly responds to the idea that haunts all prisoners- liberty it seemed to him that heaven had taken pity on him.”  Edmond was very determined to find out if it was a prisoner scratching away to freedom he tried out an experiment while banging on the wall to see if the sound would stop, and it did. “Full of hope, Edmond swallowed a few mouthfuls of bread and water, and thanks to the vigor of his constitution, found himself well-nigh recovered” This shows that after he heard the prisoner stop and not return for another hours, he got excited. It shows that Edmond no longer wanted to die. The thought of freedom saved his life. He eats bread and water. Almost recovers fully from his self harming ways, and I think this story is a perfect way to show how powerful and motivating freedom really is.
Jesse and Rene, from Blessings both have different ways to express themselves and free themselves. Jesse, writes poems, and Rene, paints. They both learn that freedom is a way to express themselves and that they can be who they are just by freeing themselves to the world. When Rene says, “man, I got to bring my paint’s up here.” It shows how she uses painting to express herself when she see’s something different and exciting. Jesse however, is a little unsure about what he uses to express himself . AT first he says he cooks, than he realizes that he really writes poems. He says, “Rene, first would you read this, its a poem. Real short. I wrote it about this place.” This shows that Jesse wants to share his poem with Rene, because this place gives them both a sense of freedom, and it brings out an artistic side in both of them.
Now that you have seen both representations of freedom, how it can be expressed as an action, of escaping and releasing yourself. Or how it can be shown as a way to express yourself while freeing yourself from stress. Freedom was both very important to Edmond, Jesse and Rene. Even though it was in its different forms. These stories are good ways to show the effects of freedom.

The secret to happiness is freedom, and the secret to freedom is courage. In The Count of Monte Cristo and Blessings, both explore the theme of freedom in different ways. One shows freedom from the real world while the other shows it from torture.

In the short story The Count of Monte Cristo, the theme is all about freedom. The main character in the story is Edmond Dantes.  He tries to starve himself, because he believes there is no hope. "So many loathsome animals inhabited the prison, their noise did not, in general, awake him; but whether abstinence had quickened his faculties, or whether the noise was really louder than usual, Edmond raised his head and listened.  It was a continual scratching, as if made by a huge claw, a powerful truth, or some iron stones."  This shows a sign of freedom, because Edmond started to believe that there may be a way out.  He doesn't know for sure yet, so he decides to talk very loud to make sure the guard doesn't hear it. Until he knows if it is a worker or prisoner.   "Edmond listened intently; an hour passed, two hours passed, and no sound was heard from the wall---All was silent there. Full of hope, Edmond swallowed a few mouthfuls of bread and water, and, thanks to vigor of his constitution, found himself almost recovered."   This shows that Edmond has courage and wants to be free.  He eats food to stay alive and now that he knows its a prisoner, he makes sure the guard doesn't hear the noises.

In the short story Blessings, the theme is also freedom or escape from the real world.  The main characters are Jesse and Rene.  "(R) Man. I've got to bring my paints up here. (J) You paint? (R)Watercolor."   This shows freedom from her normal life because it's something that Rene can do to get away from the real world.  "(J) What if? (R) Maps. Picture Maps. Of places. Uncle Randy says you make  amazing mirrors. From Redwood.  (J) Don't know how amazing they are. But I make 'em, and sell 'em. So people can see themselves in the-through the wood."  In  this conversation between Rene and Jesse it explains how both of them can escape. Rene paints to clear everything out of her mind. Will Jesse makes wood mirrors, for other people.

Freedom, it's important to everyone. I need the freedom to get away from my family and school.  So what does freedom mean to you?

Have you ever felt like you are a butterfly trapped into a glass jar , not being able to spread your wings and go wherever the wind takes you ? If so you are being deprived of your freedom, which can deprive you of the choice of where you can go, and your potential in life. The Count of Monte Cristo and Blessings  explore the theme of freedom in different ways.
The first way  the author of The Count of Monte Cristo explores the theme of freedom is how  when Edmond Dantes was in a prison for over four years , he started to starve himself because he gave up  fighting for the thing he desired most, freedom . His hope had finally ran dry but one night he heard a scratching noise and slowly his hope was regaining consciousness. “It was a continual scratching, as if made by a huge claw, a powerful tooth, or some iron instrument attacking the stone.” This quote is a second way how the author, Alexandre Dumas , incorporates the characters desire for freedom. “ Although weakened, the young man’s brain instantly responded to the idea that haunts all prisoners----liberty.”  This quote shows that everyone , even prisoners, want and believe they deserve freedom, and this is also the third way how the author puts the theme freedom into his writing.  The Count of Monte Cristo illustrates the theme of freedom in many different ways.
The first way the author of Blessings explores the theme of freedom is how the characters Jessie and Rene just want to escape from their everyday , uncreative life and express themselves artistically . Rene saw the view and immediately thought a way how to express it artistically . “ Man, I’ve got to bring my paints up here.” The second way that the author, Mary Hall Surface , incorporated the theme freedom was how one of the characters, Rene wanted to be by himself because he understands himself better that way. “Being by myself. I understand me when everyone else is lost. (Jessie laughs.) Let’s go back.” This quote shows that people don’t have to physically be in a prison to want freedom. Jessie and Rene both aren’t in a prison but want freedom to express themselves artistically.  The passage , Blessings by Mary Hall Surface illustrates the theme freedom in many different ways.
In conclusion I believe that in the passages, Blessings and The Count of Monte Cristo,  have the theme of freedom. The characters in these passages want to escape their everyday lives and express themselves. In the Count of Monte Cristo , Edmond just wants to get out of the prison he has been in for four years and be free . And in Blessings , Rene and Jesse just want to escape their everyday lives and express themselves in their own ways artistically. Have you ever felt this way? Wanting to be free of everything? Whether it is stress , strict parents, or expectations , never lose hope like Edmond ,  be a butterfly and spread your wings.
